How does consignment work at Squirrel & Sparrow?
We stock your books on a consignment basis, which means you send us copies of your book(s), and we pay you when they sell. It’s low-risk, high-love - and you keep creative control!
-
Do I need to sign the books I send?
We would love that! Our readers adore signed copies - it adds a lovely personal touch and makes your books extra special. But it’s completely up to you!
-
How many copies should I send to start with?
We usually start with 3 - 6 copies, and top up as needed. This helps us feature a wider range of authors on our shelves.
-
My book is available on Amazon. Can I still sell it through Squirrel & Sparrow Bookstore?
Absolutely! Many of our authors sell their books on multiple platforms, including Amazon, and we fully support that. Our consignment model is designed to complement your existing sales channels, not compete with them. Selling through indie bookstores like ours can actually expand your reach and introduce your work to new audiences - especially readers who love supporting small business and discovering hidden gems!
-
What do you need from me to stock my book?
We ask for:
A signed consignment agreement
3 - 6 copies of your book
A high-res cover image
An author photo
Optional extras like maps, art, reviews, or a short author letter for readers (we love whimsy!)
-
What if my book isn't ready yet?
We’re happy to work with upcoming titles and authors preparing for launch.
We recommend submitting your application early so we can learn more about you and your book and be ready to support your launch when the time comes. We do ask that you keep us informed of your release date as it approaches - we’ll keep your information on file and coordinate with you to ensure your book is stocked at the right time.

I’m an international author — can I still send my books to you? What about shipping costs?
Yes, we absolutely welcome international authors! You're more than welcome to send your books to us - we love having a global mix of voices in the shop.
That said, shipping can be pricey from outside Australia, so it's something to keep in mind. Some of our international authors choose to:
Order author copies through Amazon and have them sent directly to us
Use IngramSpark to print and ship within Australia
Or batch post multiple books at once to reduce shipping costs
We’re happy to help you find the most cost-effective option based on your location - just reach out and we’ll talk it through with you!
-
Are there any legal issues with selling my book on Amazon and through indie bookstores like Squirrel & Sparrow?
In most cases, no - you can usually do both! If you’ve self-published your book (for example, through Amazon KDP), and you own the rights, you’re free to sell it wherever you like, including indie bookstores.
The only time you'd need to be cautious is if:
You're enrolled in Amazon KDP Select (which requires exclusivity for the ebook, not the print version — so paperbacks can still be sold elsewhere!)
You have a publishing contract that restricts where your book can be sold
You’ve granted exclusive distribution rights to a distributor or publisher
If none of those apply, you’re good to go. We’re always happy to support your book alongside your Amazon sales!

Can I still sell my book on Amazon, IngramSpark, or other platforms?
Yes! As long as you own the rights and aren’t under an exclusive distribution agreement, you’re welcome to sell your book anywhere.
